Sweat Wicking Underwear for Women: 6 Options Compared

by Phillippa Owen on Aug 12, 2026
Picture of Flissie moisture wicking underwear in pink

We make one of the six options below, so read this with that in mind. Everything about the other five was checked on each brand's own website on 22 September 2026, including where a synthetic or a merino beats us.

Moisture wicking underwear doesn't stop you sweating. What the good stuff does is move sweat off your skin so it can dry, instead of leaving you sitting in a damp patch. Which fabric does that best depends on what you're doing: a hard run, a hot commute, a long walk or a long shift on your feet.

Below is the sweat wicking underwear UK shoppers can actually buy right now: six options, compared on the things you can check, which are fabric, leg length, sizes and price. Then the honest bit: what sweat proof underwear and cooling underwear really mean, and why your knickers might always feel damp.

Moisture wicking underwear: the quick answer

  • Running and hard exercise: Runderwear's Women's Running Long Boxer. A technical synthetic dries faster than any natural fibre here.
  • Heavy sweating you want held, not moved: Modibodi's absorbent sweat range, with a lining built to hold moisture.
  • Hiking and travel: Icebreaker's merino 150 Siren Bikini.
  • Cheapest, and the widest size range: Snag Stay Cool at £9.99, in UK 4 to 36.
  • Bamboo viscose from XS: Boody's 6 inch Seamfree Undershorts, from XS (UK 6).
  • Bamboo viscose with a leg that stops thighs rubbing, UK 8 to 30: our 6 inch bamboo boxer shorts.

If you only read one thing: the best moisture wicking underwear is the one matched to the job, and if sweat turns into chafing, a longer leg matters as much as the fibre.

Does moisture wicking underwear actually work?

Yes, but not in the way most people expect. Moisture wicking underwear moves sweat away from your skin and spreads it across a wider area of fabric so it can evaporate, instead of letting it sit in one damp patch against you.

That is the whole mechanism. Nothing breathable is sweat proof, whatever the label says. What good moisture wicking underwear for women does is stop the damp staying put. The difference is most obvious on a humid day, or in the second half of a long one.

Sweat wicking underwear compared

Six options, with specifications from each brand's own website, checked on 22 September 2026. Where a brand doesn't publish something, the table says so. Prices are each brand's RRP for one pair, apart from our own bundle price.

Underwear Fabric Style and leg Sizes Price
Flissie bamboo boxer shorts (ours) 95% viscose from bamboo, 5% elastane Boxer short, 6 inch, or 9 inch in black and pine green UK 8 to 30 £20, or about £13 a pair in a 7 pack
Runderwear Women's Running Long Boxer 92% recycled polyamide, 8% elastane Long boxer, 8 inch S to XL £23
Icebreaker Merino 150 Siren Bikini 83% merino wool, 12% nylon, 5% elastane Bikini brief, no leg XS to XL £35.99
Snag Stay Cool Chub Rub Shorts 94% polyamide, 5% elastane, 1% cotton Short, leg length not published UK 4 to 36 £9.99
Boody Seamfree Undershorts 79% viscose from bamboo, 15% nylon, 6% elastane Undershort, 6 inch XS to 4XL (UK 6 to 22) £22
Modibodi sweat range Absorbent lining, outer fabric varies by style Briefs, bikinis and boyshorts UK 4 to 26 £14.99 to £24.99 for briefs

Three things stand out. The wicking is done by three different fibres: polyamide (Runderwear and Snag), merino (Icebreaker) and bamboo viscose (Boody and us), while Modibodi works the other way round, holding sweat in a lining rather than moving it on. Only three of the six publish a leg length, which matters if sweat turns into thighs rubbing: ours, Boody's and Runderwear's. And five of the six ask you to air dry them rather than tumble dry, which is worth knowing before you buy a week's worth.

The six, one by one

Flissie bamboo boxer shorts (ours)

Our own product, so weigh this accordingly. Boxer shorts in 95% viscose from bamboo and 5% elastane, dyed to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The 6 inch leg sits mid-thigh and comes in every colour and size; the 9 inch sits just above the knee in black and pine green. UK 8 to 30 at one price, rated 4.6 out of 5 from 351 reviews.

The fabric breathes and moves moisture rather than holding it against you, and there are no side seams, just one flat seam at the front. The longer leg is the other half of staying comfortable in heat: it keeps damp skin from rubbing against damp skin.

“They are very comfortable and keep moisture away from my skin.” Myra, verified buyer

“Simply marvellous under my scrubs, no more creeping underwear. They're definitely moisture wicking.” Kathryn, UK, verified buyer

£20 for a single pair or about £13 a pair in a 7 pack, with free UK delivery on every order, a 60-day comfort guarantee and a free size swap on your whole first order. See our bamboo boxer shorts, or the same shorts on our anti chafing shorts page if thigh rub is the bigger problem.

Where it loses: a technical synthetic like Runderwear dries faster after hard exercise. At £20 for a single pair it costs more than Snag or a basic Modibodi brief, and bamboo viscose wants a cool wash, no fabric softener and air drying.

Runderwear Women's Running Long Boxer

The technical pick. An 8 inch long boxer in 92% recycled polyamide and 8% elastane, with 360° seamless construction and silicone grippers around the leg hems to stop them travelling. Runderwear says the fabric moves sweat off your skin fast, and for running that is what polyamide does best: it dries faster than any natural fibre here. £23 in sizes S to XL, with 192 reviews on Runderwear's UK site.

Where it loses: Runderwear won't accept returns on underwear that has been tried on, which is a real risk on a garment you can't try first. Sizes stop at XL, and synthetics tend to hold on to heat and smell more than natural fibres do.

Icebreaker Merino 150 Siren Bikini

Merino is what serious hikers wear, and the Siren Bikini is Icebreaker's lightweight everyday version: 83% merino wool, 12% nylon and 5% elastane, with the merino spun around a nylon core for strength. Icebreaker says merino regulates temperature and resists odour. £35.99 in XS to XL, rated 4.6 from 801 reviews.

Where it loses: it is the most expensive pair here by some distance, it's a bikini brief with no leg, so it does nothing for thighs rubbing, and Icebreaker's own review summary says customers find the sizing difficult. It wants a cold gentle wash and line drying, with no fabric softener.

Snag Stay Cool

The cheapest here and the widest size range by a distance: UK 4 to 36, sized by a letter worked out from your dress size and height. Snag's Stay Cool shorts are knitted from the same fabric as its tights, 94% polyamide, 5% elastane and 1% cotton, with a cotton gusset, and Snag says its cooling yarn keeps you over 1°C cooler where the fabric touches your skin. We haven't tested that, so it stays Snag's claim. £9.99 a pair, with 6,880 reviews on the product page.

Where it loses: it feels closer to tights than to knickers, Snag doesn't publish a leg length, and it wants washing in a pillowcase or wash bag and never tumble drying.

Boody Seamfree Undershorts

The closest thing here to ours. A 6 inch undershort in 79% viscose from bamboo, 15% nylon and 6% elastane, knitted as a tube so that, like ours, there are no side seams. XS to 4XL, which is UK 6 to 22 on Boody's chart, at £22 with a 30-day comfort guarantee on your first order, and rated 4.5 from 2,567 reviews.

Where it loses: sizes stop at UK 22, and Boody's own review summary notes that some wearers find they roll slightly.

Modibodi sweat range

A different product altogether. Modibodi is best known for period pants, and its sweat range works the same way: instead of moving sweat off your skin to dry, a lining wicks it away from you and holds it. Its lightest level is made for perspiration, with no period absorbency, and Modibodi says the merino in its lining controls odour. It's the only option here that is sweat absorbing underwear in the literal sense. Briefs run from £14.99 to £24.99 at RRP, in UK 4 to 26.

Where it loses: a lining that holds sweat doesn't let it evaporate, and evaporation is what cools you, so on a hot day a wicking pair is the better bet for feeling cool. Modibodi asks you to cold wash, hang to dry and skip fabric softener.

Why cotton feels clammy

Cotton is a genuinely good fabric and this is its one real weakness. Cotton fibres soak up moisture readily and then hold on to it, so sweat sits in the fabric against your skin and takes a long time to dry.

Damp skin is also tackier than dry skin, which is why chafing gets worse in humid weather than in dry heat. A little sweat can be worse than none, because skin grips instead of gliding. That is why sweaty knickers and sore thighs so often arrive together.

Which fabrics actually wick

Technical synthetics, meaning polyester and polyamide blends like Runderwear's and Snag's, dry fastest by a clear margin. The trade is that they trap heat and hold on to odour more than natural fibres do.

Merino wool is excellent at managing moisture and is what serious hikers use. It is also expensive and needs a careful cold wash.

Bamboo viscose, modal and Tencel are regenerated cellulose fibres. They move moisture rather than absorbing and holding it, and they breathe well, so they feel cooler on the skin. They need a cool wash and no fabric softener.

Cotton absorbs and holds. Fine in cool weather, poor in real heat.

The honest ranking for pure drying speed is synthetic first, then merino, then bamboo viscose and modal, then cotton. For how cool a fabric feels against your skin through a long day, the order is different, which is why the best choice depends on what you're doing.

Is sweat proof underwear a real thing?

Not as described. Sweat proof underwear, or anti sweat underwear, is a category name rather than a promise anyone can keep. You will keep sweating whatever you wear.

What's real is two different approaches. Sweat wicking underwear moves it away from you so it dries, which is what Runderwear, Snag, Icebreaker, Boody and we make. Absorbent pants hold it in a lining, which is what Modibodi makes. If you sweat heavily and want it held rather than moved, absorbent is the honest answer. If you want to feel dry and cool, wicking is.

Cooling underwear, and what the word actually means

Nothing you wear makes you colder. Cooling underwear works by letting heat and moisture leave, not by adding cold. Snag is the only brand here to put a number on it, saying its yarn keeps your skin over 1°C cooler where the fabric touches. We haven't tested that.

Three things make a fabric feel cooler on the skin:

  • It breathes. Air moves through the knit rather than being trapped.
  • It moves moisture. Evaporation is what actually cools you, and it can't happen if the damp is trapped.
  • It doesn't cling when wet. Fabric stuck to your skin blocks both of the above.

Weight and knit matter as much as the fibre: a heavy jersey feels warmer than a light one, and anything too tight feels warmer than something that fits. Most cooling underwear for women comes down to those three things. If you're buying for hot flushes or night sweats, no underwear treats either, but the same rules help, and we cover it in our guide to perimenopause, hot flushes and your underwear.

“Really comfortable, felt cool and not sweaty during the recent hot weather. Will be buying more.” Patricia, verified buyer

Why are my knickers always damp?

Most of the time it's the fabric. Cotton and cotton-rich blends hold moisture, and normal daily discharge plus a warm day is enough to keep them feeling damp. Switching to something that wicks usually solves it on its own.

The second most common cause is fit. Underwear that's too tight traps warmth and moisture with nowhere to go. Sizing up often helps more than changing fabric.

Third is what you do afterwards. Sitting in damp underwear after exercise, or staying in the same pair through a long hot day, keeps everything in place. Changing is more effective than any fabric.

If it's persistent, or comes with itching, soreness or an unusual smell, see a GP or a pharmacist. That isn't a fabric problem and no underwear will fix it.

The best knickers for sweating, by what you're doing

The best knickers for sweating UK shoppers can buy depend on the situation more than the brand.

What you're doing Best fit
Running, hard cardio, a soaked session A technical synthetic like Runderwear. It dries fastest.
A hot day, walking, a shift on your feet Bamboo viscose, modal or Tencel, ideally with a longer leg.
Multi-day hiking and travel Merino like Icebreaker, if you can afford it.
Heavy sweating you want held Absorbent pants like Modibodi.
Thighs rubbing in the heat A longer leg matters more than the fibre.
Cool weather, everyday Cotton is genuinely fine.

What to look for

Check the composition, not the marketing. Whether a brand calls them moisture wicking pants or knickers, a high percentage of a wicking fibre matters more than the word breathable on the front of the pack.

Look at the gusset separately. Many pairs are synthetic overall with a cotton gusset, which is standard and is what most general guidance suggests.

Check the returns policy before you buy. You can't try underwear on, and policies vary enormously. Some brands accept nothing once it has been tried on.

Consider the fit. Anything too tight traps heat whatever the fibre. Size up rather than down.

Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on the label, which means the finished fabric has been tested for harmful substances.

What we will not claim

We will not tell you our boxer shorts are sweat proof. Nothing breathable is.

We will not tell you bamboo viscose is antibacterial or that it stops odour. That reputation belongs to raw bamboo, and it doesn't survive the process that turns bamboo into viscose, ours included.

And we will not tell you ours are the fastest-drying option here. They aren't.

Where Flissie is not the answer

  • Running or hard cardio: Runderwear's polyamide dries faster than our bamboo viscose.
  • Heavy sweating you want held: Modibodi's absorbent range, not a wicking pair.
  • Multi-day hiking: merino, like Icebreaker's, if the price doesn't put you off.
  • The lowest price: Snag at £9.99 costs less than ours, even in a 7 pack.
  • Above UK 30, or below UK 8: Snag runs from UK 4 to 36 and Boody starts at UK 6. We run from 8 to 30.

Your questions answered

Does moisture wicking underwear actually work?

Yes, though not by stopping you sweating. It moves moisture away from your skin and spreads it so it evaporates, rather than letting it sit in one damp patch. The effect is most noticeable in humid weather and on long days.

What is the best underwear for hot and sweaty days?

Breathable underwear for women that moves moisture, in a fit that isn't tight, with enough leg to stop thighs touching if you chafe. Bamboo viscose, merino and light technical synthetics all work. Heavy cotton is the one to avoid in real heat.

What are the best moisture wicking knickers in the UK?

Of the moisture wicking knickers UK brands sell, the best depends on the job. The best sweat wicking underwear for running is a synthetic like Runderwear; for hiking and travel, Icebreaker's merino; for the lowest price and widest sizes, Snag; for bamboo viscose, Boody or us. Whatever you pick, check the composition, the gusset and the returns policy.

What is the best absorbent underwear for sweating?

Absorbent pants with a lining, like Modibodi's sweat range, hold sweat rather than moving it on, which suits heavy sweating. Most sweat proof pants women buy in the UK are really this: period pant technology used for sweat. If you'd rather feel dry and cool, a wicking fabric is the better choice.

Is bamboo underwear moisture wicking?

Bamboo viscose moves moisture rather than absorbing and holding it the way cotton does, and it breathes well, so it feels cooler and drier through a warm day. A technical synthetic will still dry faster after hard exercise.

Is there such a thing as sweat proof underwear?

Not literally. You'll sweat whatever you wear. Sweat proof usually means one of two things: fabric that moves sweat so it dries, or absorbent pants with a lining that holds it.

Why are my knickers always damp?

Usually the fabric, since cotton holds moisture rather than moving it. Fit is the second cause, because anything tight traps warmth. Changing after exercise helps more than any fabric. If it's persistent or comes with itching, soreness or an unusual smell, see a GP or pharmacist.

Does cooling underwear really keep you cool?

Nothing you wear makes you colder. Cooling underwear works by letting heat and moisture leave, which allows evaporation, and evaporation is what actually cools you. Breathability, moisture movement and a fit that doesn't cling matter more than the word on the label.
