Best Anti-Chafing Underwear for Women: 5 Long-Leg Options Compared
We make one of the five products below, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be specific about what we checked and what we did not.
If your thighs rub, the single most useful thing to shop for is leg length. A 6 or 9 inch leg puts a soft layer between your thighs so they glide instead of catching. That is the whole mechanism, and no fabric can do it if the leg stops at your hip. Everything else, fabric, waistband, price, comes second.
This compares five long-leg options with inseams from 8 to 9 inches: Flissie, Woxer, Thigh Society, Chaffree and TomboyX.

Comparison at a glance
| Pick | Inseam | Fabric | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flissie bamboo boxers | 9" (6" option) | 95% Tanboocel bamboo viscose, 5% elastane. Soft, breathable, temperature-regulating | All-day anti-chafe wear, UK 8 to 30 | Needs a cool wash, not a hot one |

| Chaffree KnickerBoxers | 8" (6" option) | COOLMAX | Budget, sweaty days, wide sizing | Functional look rather than luxury |
| TomboyX 9" Boxer Briefs | 9" | Cotton and spandex, OEKO-TEX cotton | A classic cotton feel | Cotton holds moisture |

What is actually going on when you chafe
Chafing is friction plus moisture. Skin rubs skin, sweat makes the surface tacky rather than slippery, and the combination takes the top layer off. Warm weather makes it worse because there is more sweat and usually less clothing in the way.
That gives you two things to solve. Coverage handles the friction. Fabric handles the moisture. Guidance from Cleveland Clinic on preventing chafing points at the same two levers: keep the skin dry, and reduce the rubbing.
Which is why leg length matters more than fibre. A 9 inch inseam sitting just above the knee removes skin-on-skin contact entirely for most people. A 2 inch boyshort does not, whatever it is made of.
How we compared these
We did not run lab tests and we are not claiming medical outcomes. We compared them on things you can actually check:
- Inseam length and whether the leg band is built to stay put
- Fabric composition and what the manufacturer claims for moisture and breathability
- Behaviour under clothes: rolling, riding up, visible lines, waistband comfort
- Size range and how clear the fit guidance is
- Care requirements and what they mean for how long a pair lasts
- Transparency: clear labelling, certifications, published policies
Where a claim comes from a brand rather than from us, we say so.
Underwear for thigh chafing: what to look for
If you are shopping rather than reading, this is the short version.
- Inseam length. 6 inches covers mid-thigh and handles most days. 9 inches sits just above the knee and is the safer choice for long walks, hot weather, sport, or if shorter styles have ridden up on you before
- A leg band that does not roll. This is the most common failure. A leg that rolls into a rope at the top of your thigh is worse than no coverage, because now the rope is the thing rubbing
- Moisture handling. Anything that holds damp against the skin makes chafing worse. Bamboo viscose, modal and performance synthetics are temperature-regulating and all move moisture faster than cotton
"Really comfortable, felt cool and not sweaty during the recent hot weather. Will be buying more." Patricia, verified review
- A waistband that spreads pressure rather than digging in, especially if you are sitting all day
- Your actual size. Between sizes, size up. These need full skin contact to glide rather than bunch, and sizing down works against the whole mechanism
Long knickers, long boxers, slip shorts, anti-chafe shorts and boyleg briefs are all names for versions of the same idea. What matters is how far down the thigh the fabric reaches.
1. Flissie 9" bamboo viscose boxer shorts
Best overall for everyday anti-chafe wear
Our own product, so weigh accordingly. The 9 inch inseam covers the inner thigh past the point where most chafing happens, and the fabric is 95% Tanboocel bamboo viscose with 5% elastane: soft, breathable and temperature-regulating, so it moves moisture rather than holding it.
The part we spent longest on is the leg band tension, because roll-up is the thing that makes long-leg underwear useless. It is also the thing reviewers mention most often when they have tried another brand first.
"These are very comfortable and cool to wear. Prevents chafing when wearing dresses. They have been a godsend in this hot weather. They wash well too!" Marlene, United Kingdom, verified review
"What a great pair of pants, so comfortable. This is my first time trying a longer leg. Planning on buying more." Anonymous, United Kingdom, verified review
Specifics: 6" and 9" inseams. UK 8 to 30, with no size-based price markup. Nine colours. Dyed to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. £20 a pair, around £13 a pair in a 7 pack. Free UK delivery, 60 day comfort guarantee, free first-pair size swap.
Where it loses: it needs a cool wash and air drying, and tumble drying takes the softness out. More on that in the care guide. It is also not thermal underwear, so if you came here looking for a base layer for cold weather this is the wrong product.

2. Woxer Biker 9"
Best classic boxer-brief feel
A 9 inch women's boxer brief for people who want a more structured feel than a slip short: familiar waistband, panelling that stays put, smooth under clothes. Woxer's fabric guide lists their core modal as 95% modal and 5% elastane, positioned as breathable and moisture-wicking.
Good if you want something that feels like underwear rather than shapewear, with a reliable long inseam.
Where it loses: modal can feel warmer than an ultra-sheer slip short in real heat. And if you specifically want bamboo, this is modal, which is made from beechwood.
3. Thigh Society The Cooling 9"
Best for hot weather and under dresses
A slip-short style built to reduce friction while staying very light. Sheer, cool to the touch, and the option we would pick for a summer wedding or a long hot day in a dress. The product page lists the fabric blend and states the components are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
Where it loses: sheer coverage is a preference, not a universal win. And it reads more as a slip short than as everyday underwear, so whether it works depends what you want under your clothes.

4. Chaffree KnickerBoxers
Best budget option, and the widest UK sizing
Purpose-built anti-chafing shorts with an 8 inch long option, using COOLMAX, which is a moisture-wicking performance fabric. The positioning is unusually clear: reduce sweat and friction, nothing else. The UK size range on the listing is unusually broad.
Worth a look if you want the function without paying for the finish.
Where it loses: it looks and feels like an active base layer rather than underwear. Set expectations accordingly.

5. TomboyX 9" Boxer Briefs
Best cotton-stretch option
A 9 inch inseam in 95% OEKO-TEX certified cotton with 5% spandex, with flatlock seams called out as smooth and durable. A good pick if you want a classic cotton hand-feel and a brand that builds for a wide range of bodies.
Where it loses: cotton absorbs moisture and holds it. If you sweat heavily, or you are shopping specifically because of hot weather, a moisture-moving fabric will serve you better.

If you are already looking at one of these brands
A few honest notes, since people usually arrive here mid-comparison:
- Woxer or TomboyX? Woxer's modal is smoother and cooler, TomboyX's cotton feels more familiar and comes in a wider size range. Both have reliable 9 inch inseams
- Looking for something like Woxer but in the UK? Woxer ships to the UK but you are buying from a US brand with US sizing. Chaffree and ours are UK-sized
- Boody? Boody's boyleg is around a 3 inch inseam, so it is a different product. Good bamboo viscose underwear, not really anti-chafing underwear. We compare it directly on our product page
Bamboo, and the labelling point nobody makes
Bamboo underwear has a reputation for feeling cool in heat, and breathable fabric that manages moisture genuinely does help you feel less clammy.
Here is the nuance most brands skip, including plenty selling "bamboo" underwear. The US Federal Trade Commission's guidance is that most "bamboo" textiles are actually viscose or rayon made from bamboo, and labelling should say so. That does not make the fabric bad, it is often extremely soft, but it matters for transparency, and it matters for sustainability claims. It is also why we write "bamboo viscose" rather than "bamboo".
The related point: the antibacterial reputation attached to raw bamboo does not survive the process that turns bamboo pulp into viscose. Any brand telling you their bamboo underwear is antibacterial or antifungal is over-claiming, and that specific claim set has been the subject of FTC enforcement.
Other long-leg options we did not rank
- Snag Tights Chub Rub Shorts, long anti-chafing shorts built around eliminating thigh rub
- Jockey Skimmies, a well-known slip-short designed to smooth and reduce chafe under clothes
- Woxer Biker Flex, a 9 inch active version positioned as sweat-wicking
These did not make the five either because they target a narrower use case or because they read as shapewear rather than underwear.
Your questions answered
What is the best underwear to prevent chafing?
A long inseam, 6 to 9 inches, in a fabric that moves moisture rather than holding it, with a leg band that does not roll. Leg length matters more than fibre. Any of the five above will do the job; which suits you depends on whether you want everyday underwear, a sheer slip short, or a performance base layer.
Does anti-chafing underwear actually work?
For skin-on-skin thigh chafing, yes, and the mechanism is simple: it puts a smooth surface between your thighs so they slide rather than catch. It will not help with chafing caused by seams, waistbands or ill-fitting clothing elsewhere.
What underwear prevents chafing and irritation?
Look for a long leg, smooth or flatlock seams, a non-digging waistband, and a breathable fabric. If irritation rather than friction is the problem, unperfumed and undyed matters too, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances.
Are long knickers good for chafing?
Yes, and "long knickers", "long boxers", "slip shorts" and "anti-chafe shorts" are largely different names for the same idea. The thing to check is the actual inseam measurement rather than the category name, because it varies from about 2 inches to 9.
6 inch or 9 inch inseam?
6 inches sits mid-thigh and handles most days, and it is the more discreet option under shorter skirts. 9 inches sits just above the knee and is the one to pick for long walks, hot weather, sport, or if shorter styles have ridden up on you before.
What is the best anti-chafing underwear for running?
A 9 inch inseam in a moisture-moving fabric, and a leg band that stays put when you are moving. Chaffree's COOLMAX and Thigh Society's nylon blend are the most performance-oriented here. Ours works for running and reviewers use it that way, but it is designed as everyday underwear first.
How should I wash anti-chafing underwear?
Follow the care label, because these fabrics differ more than you would expect. Bamboo viscose and modal want a cool wash and air drying. Cotton and performance synthetics tolerate more. Skip fabric softener across all of them, as it coats fibres and reduces breathability.
Is bamboo underwear antibacterial?
No. The compound sometimes credited for raw bamboo does not survive viscose manufacturing, so it is not in the finished fabric. Ours included.
