VPL meaning: what it actually stands for
VPL stands for visible panty line. It is the outline of your knickers showing through your clothes, usually across the back of the thigh or the seat, and most often under something fitted, thin or light-coloured.
It has nothing to do with how much underwear you are wearing. A thong can show. A full brief can be invisible. What decides it is where the edges sit, how thick they are, and what is on top.
What actually causes VPL
Four things, in order of how much they matter.
1. The seam or hem. A raised, stitched edge is a ridge, and under fitted fabric a ridge shows. Flat, bonded or seam-free edges sit almost level with the fabric and mostly do not. This is the whole idea behind seamless knickers.
2. Where the edge lands. An edge that cuts straight across the fullest part of your bottom will show. One that sits under the curve, or well below it, usually will not. This is why a longer leg often disappears where a brief does not, and why a seam at the front matters far less than a seam at the back.
3. What you are wearing on top. Thin, light, stretchy and pale all make it worse. White trousers are the hardest test in fashion. A thick, dark, structured fabric hides almost anything.
4. Colour contrast. Dark pants under light clothing show even when the edges are perfectly flat, because you are seeing the shadow rather than the seam.
Most advice only deals with the first one. That is why people buy no VPL knickers, find they still show under white trousers, and conclude nothing works. The seam is one cause of four.

Boody is the strictest answer to this question. Genuinely seamfree, OEKO-TEX certified, B Corp, sizes to 4XL, and a far wider range than ours: briefs, bikinis, midis, high waist, g-strings and period underwear. If invisibility under sheer fabric is the only thing you care about, they are the honest recommendation. Their limitation is that their longest women's style is a short boyleg, so it will not help if thighs rub as well.
Runderwear are the technical option. 360 degree seamless with flatlock edging, and their long boxer runs to 8 inches, so it solves both problems at once. Two catches: the fabric is a recycled polyamide, which holds odour more than a natural fibre, and they do not accept returns on underwear once it has been worn, which is a real risk on something you cannot try on.
Step One do not publish their seam construction or an inseam for the women's Body Short. If either is what you are buying on, you are guessing.
And us. No seam across the back or the sides, which is where the line actually appears, with one flat seam at the front where fabric is not pulled tight. The longest leg here at 9 inches. We are not fully bonded, so under genuinely sheer fabric Boody or Runderwear will be flatter.
The options for no VPL knickers
Fully seamless knickers
Bonded or laser-cut edges with no stitching anywhere. The best answer for very fitted, very sheer fabric, and what most brands mean when they sell seamless underwear.
The trade: almost always synthetic, because bonding needs a fabric that will fuse. That means less breathable, and it holds odour more than natural fibres. The bonded edge can also start to peel after a lot of washes.
Seamless where it shows
No seam across the back or the sides, with a flat seam at the front where fabric is not pulled tight over it.
This is what we make, and it works through placement rather than construction. The line that shows is almost always the one across your seat. Remove that and you have solved the common case, without needing a bonded synthetic against your skin.
The trade: there is still a seam. Under genuinely sheer fabric a fully bonded brief will be flatter.
No VPL thongs
A thong removes the edge across the seat entirely, so there is nothing to show. It is the traditional answer and it still works.
The trade: less coverage, no protection where thighs touch, and not everyone finds a thong comfortable for a full day. A no VPL thong still has a waistband, which can show under something very fitted and high-waisted.
No VPL full briefs, cut high
A full brief cut high on the hip puts the leg opening above the fullest part of the thigh, where clothing is looser.
The trade: the leg elastic can dig, and under a very fitted skirt the waistband can still show.
Longer legs
A 6 to 9 inch leg puts the hem well down the thigh, below the curve, where fabric is not stretched tight over it.
The trade: it is a bigger garment, and a wide waistband can show under something very fitted. It is the only option on this list that solves chafing at the same time.
Nothing at all
Some fitted clothing, particularly leggings and swimwear, is designed with a gusset to be worn without.
The trade: obvious, and personal.
Nude knickers, and what most brands get wrong
The oldest advice in fashion is wear nude under white, and it is right, but it is usually taught wrong.
Nude does not mean beige. It means as close as possible to your skin. Nude knickers that match your skin tone disappear under thin fabric because there is no contrast to cast a shadow. Underwear two shades lighter than your skin shows up as a pale block.
Most brands sell one nude and it suits one skin tone. If yours is not that one, a mid-brown, deep taupe or dark chocolate will do the job better than the beige on the packet.

Cotton and no VPL, the hardest combination
A lot of people want no VPL cotton knickers, and it is genuinely difficult to make.
Woven cotton does not bond, so a true laser-cut edge in 100% cotton is rare. Most seamless cotton underwear is a cotton blend with elastane, cut so the edges are raw or rolled rather than stitched.
Your realistic options:
- Cotton seamless knickers with a raw-cut or rolled edge. These work well, though the edge can curl after washing
- A cotton gusset with a synthetic body. Common, and it gives you the invisible finish where it shows and the natural fibre where it matters
- A longer leg in a soft natural fibre, which moves the edge somewhere it will not show rather than trying to make the edge invisible
Bamboo viscose, modal and Tencel sit between the two. Soft and breathable like cotton, and able to take a flat or seam-free finish more readily.
Is truly invisible underwear possible?
Under most clothing, yes. Under genuinely sheer fabric, no, and any brand promising otherwise is over-claiming.
Truly invisible underwear, or no VPL underwear as most brands label it, is really three things working together: no raised edge across your seat, an edge sitting somewhere the fabric is not pulled tight, and a colour close enough to your skin that it casts no shadow. Get all three right and nothing shows under normal clothes. Get only the first and you will still see something under white linen trousers.
