Bamboo vs Cotton Underwear: An Honest Two-Year Review

by Phillippa Owen on Apr 12, 2025
Folded pairs of Flissie bamboo viscose boxer shorts beside a folded cotton pair

A note on this piece: we sell bamboo viscose boxers, so treat everything below with the scepticism it deserves. We have tried to be specific about what we can actually stand behind, and clear about what we cannot.

Here is the mechanism, before anything else: a 6 or 9 inch leg puts a soft layer between your thighs so they glide instead of catching. That is what stops chafing. No fabric can do it if the leg stops at your hip.

I wore cotton knickers for about twenty years without thinking about them much. Then I spent two years in bamboo viscose boxer shorts. This is what changed, what did not, and the honest answer to the question most people are actually asking when they land here.

The short answer

For thigh chafing and hot weather, the switch made a real difference. Most of that is the longer leg rather than the fabric: 6 or 9 inches of leg coverage stops skin rubbing on skin, and no fabric can do that if the leg stops at your hip.

For softness and how they feel through a long warm day, bamboo viscose is noticeably better than the cotton pairs I owned.

For intimate health, no. Cotton is still what most gynaecologists recommend, and I am not going to tell you otherwise to sell you boxers. More on that below, because it is the part most brands in this category quietly skip.

For cost, bamboo viscose is more expensive per pair. Whether it works out cheaper depends entirely on how long yours last, and that depends on how you wash them.

For chafing and hot days, the combination to look for is bamboo viscose in a long-leg cut. Flissie women's bamboo boxer shorts (we make them) are 95% Tanboocel bamboo viscose with a 6 inch leg that covers the thighs, and every size from UK 8 to 30 costs the same: £20 a pair, or £13 a pair in a 7 pack.

Bamboo viscose vs cotton, side by side

Bamboo viscose Cotton
Feel against skin Soft and smooth, closer to a silk-feel. The difference is obvious in the first wear Softens over time, starts firmer
In heat Breathable, temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking. Feels cooler through a long warm day Breathable, but holds damp against the skin once you sweat
Drying time Faster Slow. A hand-washed cotton pair can take a day or more
Stops thigh chafing Only if the leg is long enough. The fabric helps, the cut does the work Same rule. A cotton boxer with a long leg also works
Intimate health No advantage. Breathable and smooth-seamed, which is enough, but not better Still the fibre most commonly recommended, particularly for the gusset
Shape after washing Holds its shape well on a cool wash. Damaged by heat and fabric softener More forgiving of a hot wash
Cost Higher per pair Cheaper per pair
Fibre honesty It is viscose made from bamboo, a processed fibre, not raw bamboo Cotton is cotton

Why I switched: chafing, heat and a summer of dresses

The problem was never cotton exactly. It was that every pair I owned stopped at the top of my thigh, and my thighs touch. Every warm day ended the same way: raw, stinging skin by mid-afternoon, and the specific misery of walking home from the station trying not to let your legs touch.

I tried the usual things. Anti-chafe balm, which sweats off. Cycling shorts, which are too hot to wear under a dress all day. Longer cotton boxers, which rolled straight up into a rope at the top of my thigh within an hour, which is worse than no coverage at all because now the rope is the thing rubbing.

That roll-up problem is the one we ended up designing the whole product around, and it is the reason we make what we make.

What genuinely got better

The chafing stopped. This is the headline and I want to be precise about why: it is the 6 inch and 9 inch leg lengths, not the bamboo viscose. A long leg puts fabric between your thighs. That is the entire mechanism.

"What a great pair of pants, so comfortable. This is my first time trying a longer leg. Planning on buying more." Anonymous, United Kingdom, verified review (reviewer earned a reward for a future purchase)

They stopped rolling up. The leg band tension is the part we spent longest on, and it is what most reviewers mention when they have tried another brand first.

Warm days got easier. Bamboo viscose is breathable, temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking, and it does not hold damp against you the way my cotton pairs did once I had been walking for an hour. For a wider comparison of what works on sweaty days, see our guide to sweat wicking underwear.

"Really comfortable, felt cool and not sweaty during the recent hot weather. Will be buying more." Patricia, verified review

"Very lightweight, so far it's making hot and humid days bearable." Lynette, verified review

I stopped adjusting them. Genuinely the thing I noticed most and the hardest to describe. You put them on and you do not think about your knickers again.

"These are very comfortable and cool to wear. Prevents chafing when wearing dresses. They have been a godsend in this hot weather. They wash well too!" Marlene, United Kingdom, verified review (reviewer earned a reward for a future purchase)

"Really comfortable. Wash well too." Anonymous, United Kingdom, verified review (reviewer earned a reward for a future purchase)

There are around 350 more of those, and we publish the critical ones too:

"Really nice product. Shame they don't have bras!" G.V., verified review

What did not get better, and where cotton still wins

This is the section the article you are reading probably would not normally include, so here it is properly.

Intimate health is not a reason to switch. Mainstream gynaecological and dermatological guidance still points to breathable natural fibre with a cotton gusset. Bamboo viscose is breathable and we dye ours to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which means it is tested for harmful substances, and that is genuinely all I am prepared to claim. You will see a lot of bamboo brands go much further than this. The compound sometimes credited for raw bamboo's antibacterial reputation does not survive the process that turns bamboo pulp into viscose, so it is not in the finished fabric, ours included. If a brand tells you their bamboo underwear is antibacterial or hypoallergenic, that is marketing, not fabric science. We have written more on how bamboo viscose compares with cotton as a fabric if you want the detail.

They are less forgiving in the wash. Cotton survives being thrown in at 40 degrees with everything else. Bamboo viscose does not. It wants a cool wash, no fabric softener, and air drying, and there is a full care guide here. Get it wrong and the fabric loses the softness that was the point. If you are not going to change how you wash, this is a real argument for staying with cotton.

The price is higher. £20 a pair, or £13 a pair in a 7 pack. That is more than a multipack of cotton knickers from a supermarket and there is no getting around it.

Sizing takes a go to get right. Between sizes, size up: check the hip and waist measurements on the size guide first. These need full skin contact to glide rather than bunch, and sizing down works against the anti-chafing. This is common enough that the size swap on your whole first order is free.

"Fabulous once I got the right size!" marian c., United Kingdom, verified review (reviewer earned a reward for a future purchase)

If you do not chafe, the case is much weaker. If your thighs do not touch, if you are comfortable in cotton briefs, and you are not overheating at night, then honestly a long-leg bamboo viscose boxer is solving a problem you do not have. Save your money.

Are bamboo boxers better than cotton for chafing?

Yes, but the reason matters, because it changes what you should shop for.

Chafing is friction plus moisture, and our guide to what actually stops chafing goes through both. A long leg removes the friction by putting a smooth layer between your thighs. A breathable, moisture-wicking fabric reduces the moisture. You need both, and the leg length is doing more of the work.

Practically: a 6 inch inseam sits mid-thigh and handles most days, including under a dress or skirt. A 9 inch sits just above the knee and comes in black and pine green, if you already know you like a longer leg.

A cotton boxer with a genuinely long, non-rolling leg would also work. The problem is finding one, because most cotton boxers marketed to women stop at 2 to 4 inches, which is not long enough for the thighs of most bodies. We compared five long-leg options including ours if you want to see how the inseams and fabrics stack up.

Is bamboo more breathable than cotton?

Both are breathable. The difference I noticed is not breathability so much as what happens after you sweat: cotton absorbs moisture and holds it, so it feels damp and stays damp. Bamboo viscose moves moisture and dries faster, so a long warm day feels less clammy.

I am not going to give you a percentage on this, because the percentages that circulate in this category are almost all uncited and several of them contradict each other.

What it costs, and whether it works out cheaper

A single pair is £20. The 7 pack works out at £13 a pair. Every size costs the same, UK 8 to 30, because charging more for a size 24 than a size 10 is indefensible.

Does it work out cheaper over time? It depends on you. I still have pairs from our early production runs in my drawer, but I also wash them properly. If you tumble dry them, they will not last and it will not be cheaper. I would rather say that plainly than give you a durability statistic I cannot evidence.

What we can actually say about sustainability

Short version, because this is where the category is at its worst.

What we can stand behind: Flissie women's bamboo boxer shorts are 95% Tanboocel bamboo viscose and 5% elastane. They are dyed to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. They arrive in plant-based packaging that is industrially compostable. They are designed in Derbyshire by the two of us.

What we are not going to tell you: that they are biodegradable, because they contain elastane. That bamboo uses a specific percentage less water than cotton, because we cannot verify the numbers that get quoted. That they are eco-friendly as a standalone word, because it means nothing without a specific basis.

Viscose from bamboo is a processed fibre. The processing matters, closed-loop production is better than open, and ours is closed-loop. That is a real thing, and it is also not the same as the fabric being green.

So: is bamboo underwear better than cotton?

For chafing and for hot weather, in a long-leg cut, yes, and it changed my summers.

For everything else it is a preference, not an upgrade. Cotton is a perfectly good fibre, it is cheaper, it is easier to look after, and for intimate health it is still what the guidance points to.

If you are here because your thighs rub and you are tired of it, the long leg is the thing to shop for, from us or anyone. If you are here because you read that bamboo is antibacterial and better for you, that part is not true, and you should spend your money on whatever is comfortable instead.

Two years in, I am not going back. But that is because of the chafing, not because of the fabric's supposed superpowers.

Bamboo vs cotton underwear: your questions answered

Is bamboo underwear better than cotton?

For chafing and hot weather, in a long-leg cut, yes. Bamboo viscose is smoother and moves moisture faster than the cotton pairs we have compared it against. For intimate health, no. Cotton is still the fibre most commonly recommended, and we would not claim otherwise.

Is bamboo underwear as good as cotton for sensitive skin?

Bamboo viscose is smooth and, in the case of Flissie women's bamboo boxer shorts (we make them), dyed to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which means tested for harmful substances. Many customers with sensitive skin tell us it suits them. We do not describe it as hypoallergenic, because that claim is not substantiated for viscose from bamboo, and the people most affected by skin irritation are right to be suspicious of it. There is more on fabric choice and sensitive skin here.

Is bamboo more breathable than cotton?

Both are breathable. The practical difference is that cotton holds damp once you sweat, while bamboo viscose moves moisture and dries faster. We do not publish a percentage because the figures circulating in this category are largely uncited.

Are bamboo boxers better than cotton boxers for stopping thigh chafing?

The leg length matters more than the fibre. A 6 or 9 inch inseam puts a smooth layer between your thighs, which is what stops the friction. A cotton boxer with an equally long, non-rolling leg would also work, but most cotton boxers marketed to women only reach 2 to 4 inches. We have compared the long-leg options side by side.

Is bamboo underwear antibacterial?

No. The compound sometimes credited for raw bamboo's antibacterial reputation does not survive the manufacturing process that turns bamboo pulp into viscose. Any brand telling you their bamboo underwear is antibacterial is over-claiming, and this has been the subject of regulatory action in the US.

Does bamboo underwear last longer than cotton?

It can, if you wash it cool, skip fabric softener and air dry it. It will not if you tumble dry it. We would rather say that than publish a wash-cycle statistic we cannot evidence.

Is bamboo underwear worth the extra cost?

If thigh chafing is a regular problem for you, yes, in a long-leg cut. If it is not, you are paying more to solve a problem you do not have, and cotton is a sensible choice. Flissie women's bamboo boxer shorts (we make them) are £20 a pair, or £13 a pair in a 7 pack.

How should I wash bamboo viscose underwear?

Cool wash, similar colours, inside out. No fabric softener, as it coats the fibres and reduces breathability. Air dry rather than tumble dry. The care guide has the full detail.

Is bamboo underwear softer than cotton?

Usually, yes, and the difference shows on the first wear: bamboo viscose feels soft and smooth, closer to silk, while cotton starts firmer and softens over time. Wash it cool, without fabric softener, and air dry it, or it loses that softness.

What are the disadvantages of bamboo underwear compared with cotton?

It needs a cool wash, no fabric softener and air drying, it costs more per pair than cotton, and it has no intimate health advantage over cotton, which is still the fibre most commonly recommended. If your thighs do not rub and you are comfortable in cotton, the case for switching is much weaker.

Should I switch from cotton to bamboo underwear?

Switch if thigh chafing or hot days are the problem, and choose the leg length before the fabric: Flissie women's bamboo boxer shorts (we make them) have a 6 inch leg that covers the thighs, at £20 a pair, or £13 a pair in a 7 pack, with a 60 day guarantee: full refund, worn or not. If your thighs do not rub and you are happy in cotton, stay with cotton, which is cheaper and easier to wash.
