Bamboo vs Cotton Underwear: What Actually Changed After Two Years

I wore cotton knickers for about twenty years without thinking about them much. Then I spent two years in bamboo viscose boxer shorts. This is what changed, what did not, and the honest answer to the question most people are actually asking when they land here.
The short answer
For thigh chafing and hot weather, the switch made a real difference. Most of that is the longer leg rather than the fabric: 6 or 9 inches of leg coverage stops skin rubbing on skin, and no fabric can do that if the leg stops at your hip.
For softness and how they feel through a long warm day, bamboo viscose is noticeably better than the cotton pairs I owned.
For intimate health, no. Cotton is still what most gynaecologists recommend, and I am not going to tell you otherwise to sell you boxers. More on that below, because it is the part most brands in this category quietly skip.
For cost, bamboo viscose is more expensive per pair. Whether it works out cheaper depends entirely on how long yours last, and that depends on how you wash them.

Why I switched: chafing, heat and a summer of dresses
The problem was never cotton exactly. It was that every pair I owned stopped at the top of my thigh, and my thighs touch. Every warm day ended the same way: raw, stinging skin by mid-afternoon, and the specific misery of walking home from the station trying not to let your legs touch.
I tried the usual things. Anti-chafe balm, which sweats off. Cycling shorts, which are too hot to wear under a dress all day. Longer cotton boxers, which rolled straight up into a rope at the top of my thigh within an hour, which is worse than no coverage at all because now the rope is the thing rubbing.

What did not get better, and where cotton still wins
This is the section the article you are reading probably would not normally include, so here it is properly.
Intimate health is not a reason to switch. Mainstream gynaecological and dermatological guidance still points to breathable natural fibre with a cotton gusset. Bamboo viscose is breathable and we dye ours to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which means it is tested for harmful substances, and that is genuinely all I am prepared to claim. You will see a lot of bamboo brands go much further than this. The compound sometimes credited for raw bamboo's antibacterial reputation does not survive the process that turns bamboo pulp into viscose, so it is not in the finished fabric, ours included. If a brand tells you their bamboo underwear is antibacterial or hypoallergenic, that is marketing, not fabric science. They are less forgiving in the wash. Cotton survives being thrown in at 40 degrees with everything else. Bamboo viscose does not. It wants a cool wash, no fabric softener, and air drying, and there is a full care guide here. Get it wrong and the fabric loses the softness that was the point. If you are not going to change how you wash, this is a real argument for staying with cotton.
The price is higher. £20 a pair, or around £13 in a 7 pack. That is more than a multipack of cotton knickers from a supermarket and there is no getting around it.
Sizing takes a go to get right. Between sizes, size up: check the hip and waist measurements on the size guide first. These need full skin contact to glide rather than bunch, and sizing down works against the anti-chafing. This is common enough that we make the first size swap free.

If you do not chafe, the case is much weaker. If your thighs do not touch, if you are comfortable in cotton briefs, and you are not overheating at night, then honestly a long-leg bamboo viscose boxer is solving a problem you do not have. Save your money.
Are bamboo boxers better than cotton for chafing?
Yes, but the reason matters, because it changes what you should shop for.
Chafing is friction plus moisture, and our guide to what actually stops chafing goes through both. A long leg removes the friction by putting a smooth layer between your thighs. A breathable, moisture-wicking fabric reduces the moisture. You need both, and the leg length is doing more of the work.
Practically: a 6 inch inseam sits mid-thigh and handles most days, including under a dress or skirt. A 9 inch sits just above the knee and is the one to pick for long walks, hot weather, sport, or if you have found that shorter styles still roll up on you.
A cotton boxer with a genuinely long, non-rolling leg would also work. The problem is finding one, because most cotton boxers marketed to women stop at 2 to 4 inches, which is not long enough for the thighs of most bodies. Is bamboo more breathable than cotton?
Both are breathable. The difference I noticed is not breathability so much as what happens after you sweat: cotton absorbs moisture and holds it, so it feels damp and stays damp. Bamboo viscose moves moisture and dries faster, so a long warm day feels less clammy.
I am not going to give you a percentage on this, because the percentages that circulate in this category are almost all uncited and several of them contradict each other.
What it costs, and whether it works out cheaper
A single pair is £20. The 7 pack works out around £13 a pair. Every size costs the same, UK 8 to 30, because charging more for a size 24 than a size 10 is indefensible.
Does it work out cheaper over time? It depends on you. I still have pairs from our early production runs in my drawer, but I also wash them properly. If you tumble dry them, they will not last and it will not be cheaper. I would rather say that plainly than give you a durability statistic I cannot evidence.
What we can actually say about sustainability
Short version, because this is where the category is at its worst.

What we are not going to tell you: that they are biodegradable, because they contain elastane. That bamboo uses a specific percentage less water than cotton, because we cannot verify the numbers that get quoted. That they are eco-friendly as a standalone word, because it means nothing without a specific basis.
Viscose from bamboo is a processed fibre. The processing matters, closed-loop production is better than open, and ours is closed-loop. That is a real thing, and it is also not the same as the fabric being green.
So: is bamboo underwear better than cotton?
For chafing and for hot weather, in a long-leg cut, yes, and it changed my summers.
For everything else it is a preference, not an upgrade. Cotton is a perfectly good fibre, it is cheaper, it is easier to look after, and for intimate health it is still what the guidance points to.

Does bamboo underwear last longer than cotton?
It can, if you wash it cool, skip fabric softener and air dry it. It will not if you tumble dry it. We would rather say that than publish a wash-cycle statistic we cannot evidence.
Is bamboo underwear worth the extra cost?
