General information, not medical advice.
Can women wear boxers?
Yes. There is nothing to stop you, and a lot of women already do.
The question comes up because boxers have been marketed at men for a century, not because there is any reason women should not wear them. Underwear does not know who is wearing it. What matters is whether it fits, whether it is comfortable, and whether it does the job you need.
If you have been wondering whether it is odd, or whether people would think it strange, this covers the practical side: what changes, what does not, and the objections people usually raise.
Is it healthy to wear boxers?
There is no strong evidence that any particular style of underwear is healthier than another. Claims in either direction are usually overstated.
What general guidance does tend to agree on is that breathable fabric and a fit that is not tight matter more than the style on the label. A boxer short is loose and covers more, which some people find more comfortable. That is a comfort point, not a medical one.
If you get recurrent irritation, thrush or anything persistent, that is a conversation with a GP or pharmacist rather than something a fabric will fix. We go through the evidence properly in our piece on bamboo underwear and yeast infections, including where the popular claims fall down.
The objections people usually raise
Are boxers not just for men?
That is marketing, not design. Boxers cut for women are shaped differently through the hip and seat, and the sizing runs to women's sizes rather than men's. The idea that a garment belongs to one sex is a convention, and a fairly recent one at that.
Will they be bulky or show under clothes?
This depends entirely on the cut. A traditional loose boxer will bunch under fitted clothing. A fitted boxer short with a longer leg sits flat and usually shows less than a brief, because the seam runs under the curve rather than across it.
If a smooth line matters to you, look for flat or bonded seams rather than overlocked ones.
Are they feminine enough?
Only you can answer that, and it is a fair question rather than a silly one. What we would say is that comfort and femininity are not opposites, and a lot of customers tell us they wish they had stopped choosing between them sooner.
Do they suit every body type?
They tend to work across a wider range of shapes than briefs, because there is no leg elastic cutting across the thigh. Two things to check above roughly a UK 18: whether the leg opening is graded separately from the waist, and whether the waistband is a wide band rather than narrow elastic. Most brands do neither.
What actually changes when you switch
No leg elastic across your thigh. This is the change most people notice first, particularly if you have been dealing with a line or a dig.
Less riding up, if the leg is long enough. A short leg has more thigh to travel across. A 6 or 9 inch leg has less distance to go before it meets resistance.
Thighs stop rubbing. For a lot of people this is the whole reason. A smooth layer between your thighs means they glide instead of catching, which is what stops chub rub. We cover the mechanics on our anti-chafing shorts page.
You will need to size differently. Take your normal UK size, and size up if you are between two. These work through full skin contact, so a tighter fit bunches rather than glides.
The styles, and which does what
- Traditional boxers. Loose, unfitted, most breathable. Bunches under fitted clothing
- Boxer shorts with a long leg. Fitted, 6 to 9 inches, the only style that reaches where thighs actually touch
- Boxer briefs. Fitted with a shorter leg, usually 2 to 4 inches
- Boyshorts. Shorter again, 1 to 3 inches, cut square across the thigh
Names vary a lot between brands, so check the inseam measurement rather than the product name. We go through the terminology in what women's boxer shorts are called.
What we make
Bamboo viscose boxer shorts with a 6 or 9 inch leg, UK 8 to 30, every size the same price. Soft from the first wear, wide flat waistband, smooth seams, no tag, dyed to OEKO-TEX Standard 100.
What we will not tell you is that the fabric is antibacterial or hypoallergenic. Neither claim is substantiated for viscose made from bamboo, ours included, and plenty of brands in this category say otherwise.
If the first pair is not right, the swap is free. See the range.
Questions
Can women wear men's boxers?
Yes, and plenty do. The fit will be looser through the hip and seat, and the sizing runs differently, so try a size down from your usual. Boxers cut for women are shaped for a wider hip-to-waist ratio, which is the main practical difference.
Is it weird for a woman to wear boxers?
No. It is common enough that most major underwear brands now make them, and the number of women searching this exact question every month suggests you are not alone in wondering.
Are boxers healthier than knickers?
There is no strong evidence either way. Breathable fabric and a fit that is not tight matter more than the style. If you have a persistent problem, speak to a GP or pharmacist rather than changing underwear and hoping.
Can you wear boxers under jeans or leggings?
Under fitted clothing you want a fitted boxer short rather than a traditional loose one. A long-leg boxer sits flat and usually shows less than a brief, because the seam runs under the curve of the buttock rather than across it.
Do boxers stop thighs rubbing?
Only if the leg is long enough to reach where your thighs touch, which usually means 6 inches or more. Boxer briefs and boyshorts at 2 to 4 inches do not reach.
What size boxers should a woman buy?
Your normal UK size, and size up if you are between two. A tighter fit makes bunching more likely, not less.
